On Tuesday 12th March, we took part in the Years 4, 5 and 6 Girls Football Tournament at The Bowl. There were 25 teams in total and we entered four of them; Jubilee United, Jubilee FC, Jubilee Vikings and Meadow Campus (half Vallajeelt and half St. Thomas’s).
All teams played extremely well against some tough opposition and grew in confidence with every game they played. At the end of the group stages the top two teams from each group progressed to the quarter finals. Vallajeelt United finished top of their group after winning all 6 games, scoring 19 goals and only conceding 1! In the quarter-final they played against Bunscoil Ghaelgagh winning 2-0 and in the semi-final they played Rushen winning 1-0, making it all the way to the final.
The final was very closely contested. Peel were awarded a penalty which they missed and Vallajeelt United hit the post and the crossbar. After extra time the score was still 0-0, this meant the game was going to be decided on penalties. Unfortunately, Peel went on to win the penalty shootout and Vallajeelt finished as runners-up. Although I know how disappointed the girls were not to win the tournament, they should be very proud of what they achieved. They battled hard and put in 100% showing great sportsmanship, they didn’t lose a single game and only conceded one goal all tournament!
A huge well done to all the girls who took part. It was a fantastic tournament and amazing to see so many girls playing football. A lot of the girls who played in this tournament have never played football before. A big thank you to all the parents and Mr George who helped on the day, without your help we would not have been able to take as many teams as we did.
